Coping with Grief

We all encounter loss -- God never leaves us alone

Hear me as I pray, O Lord.
    Be merciful and answer me!
My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.”
And my heart responds, “Lord, I am coming.”
Do not turn your back on me.
Do not reject your servant in anger.
You have always been my helper.
Don’t leave me now; don’t abandon me,
    O God of my salvation!
Even if my father and mother abandon me,
the Lord will hold me close.
Psalm 27:7-10 NLT

What is Grief?

Grief is the emotional and physical response to loss in our lives. Loss can be of relationships, job, pet, or security.  Death of a loved one is a significant loss that everyone faces. Recognizing the presence of loss and grief is the first step toward healing. Knowing the signs of grief can help you and others to cope.

Grieving with Children

Children and youth experience loss differently from adults. They need understanding adults who will allow safe space for them to grieve in their own way.

Reminding them of God's love and  care  is important in this process.

Where is God?

Sometimes grieving raises questions about our faith. God knows this and is patient with us. The Psalms are full of laments that cry out "Where are you, God?"(Ps. 42) and "How long must I wait for you to do something?" (Ps. 13) Reading the Psalms can help us find our voice in relation to God, who always hears us and responds in love.

Remembering that Jesus mourned the death of a friend and our heavenly Father grieved the death of his only Son anchors our faith even in grief.  Here are voices of hope.

God is also present in the people around us -- the friends and family, pastors and counselors, neighbors and caregivers. Their presence is one way God assures us of his love for us.

Talk about it with others

Sharing feelings of grief helps the process of grieving. Martin Luther encouraged people who were sad to seek out the company of others -- especially when they didn't "feel like it"!  Mary and Martha poured out their hearts to Jesus when their brother Lazarus died. The community of faith is especially helpful for those who mourn, providing ears, hearts, hands, prayers, and casseroles.
